If you want to use custom printed checks then you will need to have the appropriate equipment, software and blank check paper. You will also need to find and use the correct bank printing ink., The scanners used by banks when processing checks, respond to a specific type of ink, known as MICR. MICR stands for magnetic ink code recognition and uses ink infused with metal particles to trigger the banks reading and scanning equipment.

If you use the wrong process and the MICR is not of sufficient quality, the bank's scanning equipment will not be able to read them and this cause delays for you and your suppliers or employees - who ever you are paying. You should be aware that MICR inks and toners are usually a great deal more expensive than standard printing inks and toners, so unless you have a machine dedicated to custom check printing, you will have to change the cartridges regularly to keep your MICR inks from drying out.

As described, you can print custom checks at home or in your office but often it is a much more easier and cheaper to simply place an order with a custom printing company. You might want to consider this option before you embark on printing your own custom checks.
