In 1996 the law in the US changed to allow small businesses to make out checks on behalf of their debtors. This is a faster and more efficient way of taking payment than waiting for a check to arrive via the post. The Federal Reserve stipulates however that you must use business check blanks.

Blank checks can be ordered from various sources, and are particularly easy to source via the Internet. The stock blanks that you purchase are made with a particular 'secure' paper and if you don't use it a lot of banks won't be processing your printed checks.

Though it's not strictly speaking essential, most small and medium size enterprises use check printing software in tandem with each blank business check. This has the huge advantage of making sure all the parts of the check are printed in the right place.

This is important because banks are largely automated and misprinted business checks will have to be manually examined. This means time, which of course means money.

Most of these packages aimed at small business (and often large companies) will fill out your blank business checks so they resemble any bank check. Right down to the odd looking numbers across the bottom. These are MICR numbers and if used correctly can help the banks out with their automation.
